Hawkgirl/Covergirl Collection #120

Justice League of America #136 (November 1976) VG 4.0 $4.37

Cover pencils by Ernie Chan, inks by Frank Giacoia

Although Hawkgirl does not appear on the cover of this issue from 1976, she does have a guest-starring role in the story titled “Crisis on Earth-S”. In it, she is teamed up with a female hero who was created a little earlier than Hawkgirl was. Bulletgirl first appeared in Nickel Comics #1 (1940).

JLA #136 was the middle book in a three-issue annual crossover story-arc. In the story Hawkgirl joins her spouse Hawkman as the member of an eight-hero team; with the other members being from Earth-2 and Earth S. That is “S” as in Shazam, the code word used by young Billy Batson to transform himself into the Earth’s mightiest mortal, Captain Marvel.

On the cover we see the Earth-2 Batman, Robin and Hawkman Earth-1 taking on Dr. Light, the Shade, and the Joker of Earth-2.

Hawkgirl did appear on the cover of the previous issue where she is listed as a “special guest.” This is where the story begins. In the story, 18 heroes from three worlds come together to do battle against an evil monarch from Earth’s past. His name is King Kull, Lord of the Beast-Men. He is taken over the legendary rock of eternity home of the wizard Shazam and refuge of the ancient gods of magic. Kull’s plan is for the destruction of humans on all the worlds where they exist.

Justice League of America #135 (October 1976)

Along with some heroes from the Justice Society of America, six members from the Justice league of America are teamed up with a group of heroes known as Shazam’s Squadron of Justice. Bulletman and Bulletgirl were Fawcett Comics’ second-most-popular characters after Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family. The other members of the squad were Spy Smasher, Mr. Scarlett and Pinky, the Whiz Kid.

Script by E. Nelson Bridwell (plot) and Martin Pasko (script), pencils by Dick Dillin, inks by Frank McLaughlin

Bulletgirl was actually a grown woman who was secretly Susan Kent, the wife of Jim Barr, the Bulletman. At Hawkman’s suggestion they swap partners. Perhaps a swinging first for DC Comics.

Hawkgirl and Bulletgirl head for Yellowstone national park in in Wyoming and pay a visit the Great Falls. They arrived just in time to witness the falls spring to malevolent life. Just as they realize that tourists have been turned into water, they are met by the Earth-1 villain and future rapist, Dr. Light.

Knocked out and nearly scalded, Hawkgirl is rescued from a blast from a giant geyser by a quick thinking Bulletgirl.

After making short order of Dr. Light, Hawkgirl is the one who discovers the means by which the heroes can defeat King Kulls’s attempt to destroy humanity on Earth-2. Chalk another up for Hawkgirl.
